[ARCHIVED] Leesville Mayor’s Women’s Commission and Leesville Junior League to Hold Trash Bash

The Leesville Mayor's Women's Commission (MWC) will partner with the Leesville Jr. League when they host their annual Trash Bash on April 5, 2025 from 8 - 11 am at the Leesville Art Park (Magnolia Park).

The event will kick off several events organized in the city as part of the state-wide Love the Boot Week which runs April 5-13, 2025. Love the Boot Week is organized by Keep Louisiana Beautiful and supported [MF1] by the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

The Women’s Commission will be awarding cash prizes to three winners in both the Trash Volume category and the Scavenger Hunt category, as well as serving free chili dogs to all participants after the event. In addition, they’ve arranged for a dumpster to be located at the site and for Public Works to make extra pick-ups from the city’s neighborhoods during the week prior to the event.

Litter is not a new problem for Louisiana. For decades, litter has become increasingly detrimental to our communities, leading to a multitude of repercussions such as:

  • Blight on natural areas, cities, towns, roadways, and waterways
  • Death of wildlife due to polluted habitats
  • Decline in quality of life in neighborhoods
  • A negative impact on economic development, infrastructure, and tourism
  • Flooding caused by storm drains clogged with litter and debris

Despite spending over $91.4 million in litter abatement each year, Louisiana is still experiencing shocking levels of litter statewide. “Picking up litter is important, but litter education is the primary goal of Love the Boot Week,” says Susan Russell, Executive Director of Keep Louisiana Beautiful. “If we can all learn the repercussions of litter and adopt behaviors to prevent it from happening in the first place, we will see a cleaner, greener Louisiana.”

To address this objective, the MWC has acquired lesson plans and activity books which will be distributed, through the Vernon Parish School Board, to every school in the parish. In addition, they have invited youngsters to participate in a Poster / Essay contest. Mayor Rick Allen will present the awards for these contests at 4:30 pm on April 7, 2025 at the Leesville Event Center.

Volunteer teams are encouraged to pre-register – which will help with planning - at www.LeesvilleLA.gov, but if that is not possible, you can register at Leesville City Hall during regular business hours or at the park on the morning of the event.

Lots more information can be found at www.LeesvilleLA.gov.  Questions about this specific event should be directed to Mary Ann Fussell at 337-239-2444.
