Hurricanes

Advance Warning

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 every year and it's best to be prepared. Citizens are encouraged to sign up for free Nixle alerts from the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office by dialing 888777 on their cellphone. Once signed up, they will receive a text notification whenever a hurricane warning is issued for the area by the US National Weather Service. This will give you time to prepare your home and consider whether to evacuate to a safer location.

When you choose not to evacuate

Before Landfall:

  • Develop a plan that includes what each family member will do, where you will go, and how you will find one another in case of problems getting there.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with enough supplies for your entire family. Include enough water, food, medicine, supplies for your children and/or pets, and cash to last a minimum of three days.
  • Clear your yard of any loose items that might be blown around by strong winds causing damage to life or property.
  • Fill up your vehicles and purchase extra fuel for generators, if needed.
  • Acquire sandbags as needed from Public Works located at 201 Redtown Rd. to prevent any flooding of your home.

During the Event:

  • Stay indoors, preferably in a small room with no windows.
  • Follow the City of Leesville on Facebook to stay informed.
  • Dial 888777 to receive text updates from the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office.
  • Monitor your local radio and TV stations for the latest forecasts.

Dealing with Damages:

  • It may take some time to restore power and water. Use caution when using a generator, making sure to follow all directions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Be careful during clean-up. Wear protective clothing and work with someone else.
  • Avoid any downed power lines.
  • Avoid wading in flood waters, which can contain dangerous debris, snakes, and even alligators.
  • Use cell phones only for emergencies. Phone systems are often down or busy after a disaster. Use text messaging or social media to communicate with family and friends.
  • Document any property damage with photographs. Contact your insurance company for assistance.
